Workshop On Data Dissemination, Standardization And Exchange

Topic area: metabolomics standards and data dissemination and exchange

Relevance: The metabolomics community has seen a first round of standardization efforts culminating in a set of publications in 2006 and 2007. We are now witnessing the emergence of open, general purpose repositories such as MetaboLights (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/metabolights) at the European Bioinformatics Institute and similar efforts in the US, which make use of those standards and which open up the opportunity for a worldwide network of metabolomics data deposition and exchange. In addition the emergence of large general e-infrastructures in the life sciences such as the BioMedBridges project, ELIXIR and BBMRI call for standardized interfaces for metabolomics to seamlessly integrate with other biomedical areas.

In this workshop, participants will be able to inform themselves in an interactive way about the current status in the development of this worldwide network of databases arising and current activities such as the European FP7 coordination action COSMOS (http://www.cosmos-fp7.eu) and the NIH common funds initiative in Metabolomics. Those initiatives aims to build on the earlier developments and continue the work on standardization of data and meta data and to establish best practices and workflows for metabolomics data deposition and dissemination.
